DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The 50th running of Grandma’s Marathon along with the 5K and half marathon will result in a number of road closures and detours on Friday and Saturday.
The William A. Irvin 5K begins at 1 p-m on Friday, an earlier start than usual. Portions of Railroad Street will be closed beginning at 12:30 until the race is complete and watch for no parking areas on Railroad Street, Lake Place Drive and Harbor Drive.
Also on Friday, Canal Park Drive from Railroad Street to Buchanan Street will be closed for Grandma’s finish line setup and remain closed to vehicle traffic until late on Saturday.
On Saturday morning, scenic Highway 61 will close from Duluth to Two Harbors at 4:15 a-m and some lane closures will also be found on the Highway 61 Expressway.
Starting at 5:30 a-m all of London Road will close along with Superior Street from 12th Avenue East to 5th Avenue West. The southbound lanes of I-35 from 26th Avenue East will close at 4:30 and northbound lanes will close from Mesaba Avenue at 5:30 with detours posted.
The only access to Park Point during the race will be on 5th Avenue West from Superior Street and motorists should follow signs and traffic officer directions.
DTA buses will use 1st Street in both directions from 6th Avenue West to 2nd Avenue East on race day and other route changes can be found on their website duluthtransit.com.
Motorists in Duluth should expect a high volume of traffic on Friday and Saturday and should be alert and expect delays.
