Oct 09 (Field Level Media) – The Chicago Fire have agreed to terms on a contract extension for breakout forward Maren Haile-Selassie, coach Gregg Berhalter announced Thursday.
At his weekly press conference, Berhalter was asked about Haile-Selassie’s future with the team, as the Swiss native was on an expiring contract.
“We’ve reached an agreement with Maren and he’s going to be staying a Chicago Fire player, and we’re really happy,” Berhalter said. “Not only is he a really good player, but he’s a tremendous person. He’s one of those guys that helps bind the team together, can play multiple positions.
“So for us, this long-term contract extension is a great signing for the club.”
Haile-Selassie, 27, has been with Chicago since 2023 and is enjoying a career year. In 27 league games (21 starts), he has tallied nine goals and nine assists to lead the Fire with 18 goal contributions.
Haile-Selassie posted one of each Tuesday night when the Fire downed the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1.
In 116 MLS regular-season appearances (69 starts), Haile-Selassie has recorded 22 goals and 30 assists. Before entering the league, he played for his hometown club FC Zurich along with Neuchatel Xamax and Lugano.
