DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the Western Lake Superior watershed has entered a drought situation.
The watershed includes the Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor and Rice Lake areas and residents are encouraged to be mindful of their water use during this drought period.
Among the outdoor tips offered by the DNR to conserve water are limiting lawn watering to an inch a week and only between the hours of 6 p-m and 9 p-m. Let lawns grow longer and leave grass clippings in place to prevent drying and wash your vehicles less often.
Inside water conservation measures include taking showers instead of baths and using low-flow showerheads, turn off the water when brushing teeth or shaving, only run dishwashers and wash machines when they have a full load and use water efficient appliances.
The City of Duluth supplies water from Lake Superior to most of the region and says water conservation is a vital element of drought response plans.
